Bangkok hotel apologizes for transsexual ban incident.
A nightclub at Novotel Bangkok, which was widely reported to have discriminated against a transsexual by barring her from entering its premises, has issued an apology amidst a boycott that was underway.
Novotel Bangkok - part of the French-owned Accor Group - on Thursday issued an apology to a Thai transsexual who was barred from the hotel’s nightclub almost two weeks ago. The widely reported incident has prompted Bangkok Rainbow Organization and other local LGBT groups to launch a worldwide boycott of the Bangkok hotel and other Accor properties.
[PIC]“On behalf of Novotel Bangkok in Siam Square, I would like to extend my sincere apology to Suttirat Simsriwong for the unfortunate incident that took place on Friday June 22 between her and the CM2 management and staff,” Novotel Bangkok manager Gerald Hougardy told a roomful of gay rights advocates and reporters.
Suttirat, who was dressed as a woman at the time, was barred from entering the the CM2 nightclub at Novotel Bangkok on the grounds that she was a kathoey, the Thai word for a transsexual.
Although Hougardy insisted that the hotel did not have a policy to refuse entry to people based on their sexual orientation, it accepts “responsibility for the error in judgment by our employees on the night in question,” adding that such an unfortunate incident would not happen again.
“I accept the apology,” said Suttirat, and added, “What’s past is past.” Suttirat urged gay rights groups to now drop their boycott of the Novotel Bangkok and other Accor hotels.
“In the future I will be a guest of the Novotel,” said Sutthirat during the press conference organized by the hotel.

Transsexuals people experience varying degrees of acceptance in non-Western societies.
Before the Islamic Revolution in 1979, the issue of transsexualism in Iran had never been officially addressed by the government. Beginning in the mid-1980s, however, transgendered individuals have been officially recognized by the government and allowed to undergo sex reassignment surgery.
This stance is also seen in countries such as Brazil and Thailand. Thailand is thought to have the highest prevalence of transsexualism in the world. In Thailand, kathoey (who are often, but not always, transsexual) are accepted to a greater extent than in most countries, but are not completely free of societal stigma. Feminine transsexual kathoey are much more accepted than gay male kathoey; this may be seen as an example of heteronormativity. Due to the relative prevalence and acceptance of transsexualism in Thailand, there are many accomplished Thai surgeons who are specialized in sex reassignment surgery. Thai surgeons are a popular option for Western transpeople seeking surgery, largely due to the lower cost of surgery in Thailand.
Transsexual people are gaining acceptance in much of Latin America, and gender reassignment surgeries are on the rise in Mexico, Argentina and Brazil.
